"VIENNA REDUX"

Inscape Chamber Orchestra

Sunday October 9, 2011 . 5PM

Inscape opens the season with an exploration of musical currents in Vienna ca. 1920. Specifically, we draw inspiration from the Society for Private Musical Performances, a group formed by composer Arnold Schoenberg to perform modern music for interested members of the Vienna public.

The concert opens with the sublime romanticism of Zemlinsky's Maiblumen blühten überall for string sextet and soprano followed by Schoenberg's adaptation of Gustav Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen featuring baritone James Rogers.  The concert concludes with a performance of Schoenberg's rarely performed and fiendishly difficult Serenade, Op. 24.

Program:

Alexander von Zemlinsky : Maiblumen blühten überall
Gustav Mahler/Schoenberg : Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer)
Arnold Schoenberg : Serenade, Op. 24
Luigi Denza/Schoenberg : Feniculi, funicula

Solomon is featured as clarinet soloist in Adams's Gnarly Buttons.

Program:

Michael Torke : Adjustable Wrench
John Adams : Gnarly Buttons (Evan R. Solomon, clarinet)
